  • The small letters in the margins are cross references. The Great Bible had no Marginal Notes, just references to other related Scripture.

  • Although you can see that Scripture is divided into paragraphs, note that there are no verse numbers. Each chapter was divided lettered sections, each about 4 to 8 verses long. These are called "lecterns." Each chapter started with "Lectern A" and, depending on the length of the chapter, would end somehwere around Lectern E or F. You can see these letters in the margins. This page contains Matthew 19:d through Matthew 21:a. It was not a handy way to refer to scripture. (Our Closeup View shows this better.)
